Hard questions, answered in the book
The questions careful readers and AI models raise when they read TSR closely, each answered in Nicholas Ferguson’s own words from The Sovereign Mirror. Each answer links to the chapter it comes from. About 16 minutes. What the book leaves open is on Where it holds, what’s still open.
Does everything really follow from one rule?
One simple basis, followed all the way through: the starting point from the Prelude—that awareness came first and made parts of itself, and with parts came difference—paired with the mirror rule between resistance and receptivity. Because awareness is first, nothing it experiences can be un-known, and not because being first makes it a vault. Forgetting is a physical event: a mark fading in a medium that can decay. The receptive side has nothing that decays, so there is nothing a thing could fade from, which is why expansion can’t be undone; and because resistance stays on the physical side, only what is wanted crosses into the whole. It has gaps, and I’ll show you where they are. But the rest mostly writes itself. The conclusions keep agreeing with each other. They also keep agreeing with what people who meditate and pray have been describing for thousands of years, in their own words.
So the first partition is the one move in the book my own rule can’t produce. It isn’t a result. It’s the axiom, the place the thought game starts, and every system has one. If you can get behind it, you’ll have gotten further than I did.
How do you know whether a row turns around or keeps its shape?
What you have to know is whether the relationship keeps its shape or turns around. If it depends on resistance, so that more mass means more of something, flipping resistant to receptive turns it around: more Movement means less of that thing, or it gets easier instead of harder. If it’s an identity or a definition, two names for one thing, the way mass is density times volume and force is mass times acceleration, there’s nothing to turn around, even with mass in it; the terms reflect and the relationship keeps its shape. That’s the one rule.
Look at numbers five, six and eight. Time dilation and length contraction don’t depend on mass in physics, only on how close you are to the speed of light—so there’s no resistance in them to flip, and they keep their shape, reflected as the gap and the shrinking distance. Number eight is about how much energy it costs to speed a mass up as it nears light speed. That one has mass in it, which means resistance is at work. When you flip resistance to receptivity, number eight has to invert: physically, each next bit of speed gets harder; nonphysically, each next bit of alignment gets easier.
Force is mass times acceleration. Shouldn’t that turn around when mass becomes receptive?
If it’s an identity or a definition, two names for one thing, the way mass is density times volume and force is mass times acceleration, there’s nothing to turn around, even with mass in it; the terms reflect and the relationship keeps its shape. That’s the one rule.
And the condition flips, as always: Force reads how hard you’re pushed against resistance, Frequency reads how freely you’re yielding to receptivity.
Physically, what you feel is the floor, how hard you’re held. Frequency, the reflection of mass times acceleration, reads how freely you’re falling. Those aren’t two frames stitched together. Under a steady pull, what holds you and how fast you’re speeding up always add up to the whole pull: all floor and no speeding up when you stand, no floor and all of it when you fall. Under resistance, you feel the first part. Flip the condition and you feel the second. Appreciation is how much of the pull you’re letting move you: full in free fall, low while you hold, and that is what I meant in Chapter 2. The falling man is the most aligned with gravity anyone can be, and he’s the one who feels nothing but ease.
Is TSR physics? Can you plug numbers into it?
No. The nonphysical doesn’t hold still to be counted. It has no dimensions, so there’s nothing to measure it with. The relationships carry across the mirror. The quantities don’t. What you can do is look at the qualities and see whether they behave the way the relationships say they should. That’s what the rest of this book does.
When I lean on Einstein in this book, I’m using the shape of his thinking to look at the other side of it. I’m not adding to his physics. Obviously the nonphysical isn’t physics. It’s the inverse reflection of it, and that is the whole claim: the table borrows the shape of physics, not its authority, and every row has to earn its place by holding the rows around it up.
Does one E between two equals signs say conscious and physical energy are equal in amount?
I’m not equating a number of joules, because the left side has no numbers. Putting one E in the middle says something simpler and more important: there aren’t two separate energies in the universe, one spiritual and one physical. There’s one energy, organized as realization on one side of the mirror and as actualization on the other.
Why products? And what are Tune and Focus doing on the product signs?
There’s nothing to count on that side, so I don’t call it multiplication. I read the sign as “the product of.” A relationship produces something, and what it produces is its product. That meaning survives the mirror, and it’s the one I mean.
And calling the sign a product isn’t a loophole. It’s the strictest constraint in the book. In a sum, one part can do the work while the other sits at zero. In a product, if either factor is zero, the whole thing is zero: no Movement, no conscious energy. The equivalence itself never goes to zero for anything with mass; a rock has its energy and a distracted person has theirs. But for an entity, the sign is also a crossing it runs, and that’s why Tune and Focus sit on the signs: they decide what each crossing lets through. Close Tune and nothing is drawn from the Current through you. Close Focus and nothing is actualized through you in the world. That’s what stops me from claiming that wishing or feeling good does anything by itself. What Tune and Focus govern is the circulation through you, and a zero shuts the circulation: nothing received, or nothing acted on. Contrast still makes Desire, and Desire still expands the Current, whether you’re tuned or not; that crossing is automatic.
Why the square? What do the two Cs do?
Here’s the difference between the two, in words. The first C is the Current carrying the Movement: where you are in the flow, your place in it, what the flow is doing with you. That’s momentum, and it’s yours. The second C is that carried Movement given back to the Current: what your being carried adds to the whole, how the flow is changed by having carried you. That’s energy, and it belongs to everything. Once is position. Twice is contribution. Physics has the same two steps: mc is a mass’s momentum through time, and the second c is what that momentum is worth to the universe as energy.
The Current keeps growing. How can it be the invariant, the way c is?
How can something that grows be the invariant? The same way c is. The speed of light isn’t a place; it’s the front edge of what can be reached, the same for every observer no matter how fast they’re going. The Current is the front edge of what the whole has reached, the same for every Movement no matter how aligned it is. It moves, and it is always exactly where the edge is. That’s what being the reference means on either side: not standing still, but being the limit everything else is measured against. And say exactly what stays the same while it grows, because the content doesn’t. What’s invariant is the rate. The exchange between Vibration and Expansion at the front edge is the same for every Movement, the way the exchange between space and time is the same for every observer. The Current’s content is always larger than it was. Its rate never changes, and I mean rate without a number: at the front edge, every expansion becomes vibration with nothing in the way, and that immediacy is the same for every Movement. That’s the invariant, and every nearness in this book is measured against it.
Is conscious energy the reflection of rest energy or of kinetic energy?
Both have reflections. Rest energy is the reflection of C²M: the energy a Movement has by existing in the Current, even when it isn’t changing in Vibration. Kinetic energy is the reflection of a Movement changing its Vibration, which is where Frequency and Appreciation live.
Momentum is an entity property, and M × C is also called momentum. Is one word doing two jobs?
That’s why the word appears twice in the book and means one thing. On each side, momentum is what a thing carries through its own continuum: mass times velocity physically, Movement times Vibration over Expansion nonphysically. The entity property called Momentum is those two met at the crossing. Same word, because it’s the same thing seen from the whole.
Is resistance the enemy?
There are two kinds of resistance, and we’ll spend a lot of time on the difference. One kind makes you a definite someone. The other keeps you from changing when a change is already wanted. I’ll call the first your shape and the second holding on. Your shape is what makes you particular, and it stays yours as long as you have a body. Holding on is where most of the suffering in a life comes from. When I talk about lowering resistance in this book, holding on is the kind I mean. For now, just know that resistance itself isn’t the enemy. It’s the price of being particular, and being particular is the whole point.
So holding on isn’t a second kind of stuff. It’s the same resistance, pointed against something you now want. The expectation that lets you speak English and the expectation that your book will be rejected are the same force at the same crossing; the difference is that no desire of yours is pushing against the first. Shape is Expectation with nothing wanted against it. Holding on is Expectation with a Desire on the other side.
Chapter 1 · If It’s All One, Why Am I Me?Chapter 10 · The Filter
Why does only the wanting cross, and who decides what the wanting is?
Resistance is a physical property. It’s the defining physical property. So resistant energy can’t flow into the nonphysical. It isn’t a rule anybody enforces. There’s simply nothing on that side for resistance to be. A thing that resists can’t enter a medium whose whole nature is receiving.
And you don’t have to take my reading of what’s underneath. There’s a question that does it for any want: what in this would I still want if the hurt were gone? Ask it of revenge and you get safety, wholeness, being treated right. Ask it of a grudge and you get peace. Whatever survives the question is what crosses. Whatever doesn’t survive it was the resistance. And the question is for your own wanting, never for someone else’s. If a person insists the humiliation is the want, that’s their reading of their own crossing, and on this side it governs; Chapter 13 is about why. The filter isn’t a judge I get to run on them. It’s a condition at their own Point of Reflection, and what crosses from there is settled there, by the Current receiving only what can be received, not by me deciding what they really meant.
Are you saying nuclear forces cause habits? Are Expectation and Belief literally the strong and weak forces?
No more than I’m claiming the gravity of Jupiter is what keeps you at your job.
Expectation and Belief are those two forces at the scale of an entity, the way the tension in a nervous system is inertia at the scale of a body: the scale changes and the job doesn’t. Then they reflect across the mirror from there, the same as every other row.
Take the relationship literally, not the number; the rule doesn’t carry numbers across.
And I didn’t get that from the proton. I got it from a voice recorder and a job search, which are coming in Chapter 12; the proton was the first time I saw the same behavior with a name on it. That’s the direction the evidence runs in this book: the life first, and the physics as the place the shape turned out to already be.
Isn’t Tune just another word for surrender?
Surrender is receptive, so it passes the first test. But tuning selects. It picks the station. Surrender picks nothing. Put it at the product sign and your free will disappears from the whole nonphysical half, and Attraction has nothing left to weight.
Let go of the grip, not the want.
Light has no mass. Is it the exception to the rule?
The best reading I have is that light isn’t the exception. It’s the asymptote. Physically, as mass goes to zero, speed goes to light’s, and nothing with any mass at all gets there. So light is the physical world at the surface of the mirror: zero mass, all limit, the one place the physical side touches the nonphysical without crossing. On that reading c is the edge of one side and C is the edge of the other, and the mirror is where the two edges meet. That’s a position, not a proof.
Why can’t what you’ve expanded into be undone?
You can cover a cut. You can’t uncut it.
That’s the answer to the question in the title of this part of the book. Why can’t we go back? Because expansion can’t become unexpanded. When the Current expands, the whole it’s part of is now more than it was. To go back, you’d have to remove that expansion from everything it has touched since, and everything it touched has changed everything else. And even the removing would become another layer.
Isn’t Culmination just entropy seen from the other side?
My reading is that entropy’s reflection is culmination: relation that keeps gathering and never ungathers. Go back to the thought game. Every collision made a new combination of vibrations, and every particle’s path was shaped by its relationships to every other particle. Physics has a name for that now: once two things interact, their states are correlated, and in anything bigger than a few particles those correlations spread into everything else that touches them, until no one can get them back. On the physical side, with distance in it, that spreading looks like entropy: things disperse and don’t come back. Gravity can pull matter together into a star, and the spreading still goes on: the star pours its light and heat out into everything around it. On the nonphysical side, with no distance, the same accumulating correlations look like culmination: more and more gathered into relation, never less. Radiation and Collection, applied to the history of everything that ever touched. That would make time’s direction and expansion’s direction one relationship seen from both sides. It’s a reading, not a result, and it should be worked through by someone who knows the physics better than I do. But it’s the reading I’d bet on.
If something feels easy, does that mean it’s right?
There’s also a trap in “it felt right.” Sometimes a path feels easy because somebody else is carrying the hard part of it. The relief is real. It still isn’t permission.
This is why there are two kinds of evidence. My ease is emotional evidence about my alignment. It doesn’t tell me who’s paying for it. For that I have to look at the world, and at the people around me, and listen to what comes back In From them. Sometimes my ease only means somebody else is carrying the resistance.
Chapter 8 · Two Kinds of EvidenceChapter 13 · The Other Person Is Real
Does TSR blame people for their suffering or their illness?
And if you’re waiting for the part where I say people cause their own illnesses, or that someone’s suffering was their own doing, it isn’t coming. Chapters 13 and 19 say the opposite, and I’d rather you know that now than wonder for the rest of the book.
A body is a system inside larger systems: a family, a town, a food supply, an environment. The link between cancer and toxins isn’t in question. Genes are real. Viruses are real. Poverty is real. A body can be influenced by the resistance of every larger system it belongs to, and most of that resistance isn’t the person’s. Nobody earns an illness.
And I’d never tell anyone to trade treatment for a better mood. Medicine is Focus on the physical side, and the physical side counts.
Isn’t this just the Law of Attraction with a complicated diagram?
It grew up in the same house. I’m not going to pretend it didn’t.
The weather is Abraham’s. What I’ll claim as mine is the mirror run term by term from one rule; the split between the resistance that makes you a someone and the resistance that is suffering; and the other person as a structural part of the circulation, not a caveat added at the end.
The third is the mechanism. The Law of Attraction tells you that like attracts like and that you should feel good. It doesn’t tell you why the nonphysical is “pure positive,” or why negative experiences expand you instead of dragging the universe down with you, or why you can want something more and more clearly for twenty years while your life stays exactly the same. TSR explains all three with the same piece, which is the next chapter.
The fourth is the other person. This is where I part ways with a lot of that shelf. The popular version of attraction thinking can turn cruel fast: if you’re sick, you attracted it; if you’re poor, your vibration is off; if someone hurt you, you must have been a match for it. TSR doesn’t allow that. Other people are sovereign. They have their own Movements, their own resistance, their own returns. What happens to them is not a report card on their thoughts. I’ll show you why that follows from the structure, not just from being nice.
Are some people more spiritually advanced than others?
Reflected: no particular perspective is the view of the whole. Every point of view is shaped by its resistance, including mine. That’s sovereignty, and it’s also why there’s no spiritual rank.
What counts as an entity? A rock? An AI?
An entity is anything that’s running the full circulation I described in the second part of this book. Desire going Out For it. Realization coming In To it. Actualization going Out Through it into the world. Returns coming back In From the world. It’s the physical energy of an animated system transmuting with the conscious energy of the nonphysical that runs through everything. Where that’s happening, there’s an entity. Where it stops, the entity stops. And what comes back has to become part of it. An entity is changed for good by its returns, the same way the Current is changed for good by what goes out. Biology has a close cousin to that test. Two Chilean biologists, Maturana and Varela, defined a living thing as a network of processes that keeps producing the very processes that produce it, and called it autopoiesis, self-making. It’s the nearest thing to the cycle I’ve found in science. The difference is the last sentence. Theirs needs the thing to keep itself going. Mine needs it to be changed for good by what comes back. Self-maintenance is a loop. An entity is a loop that expands, and that difference is what sorts the hard cases below.
The rock participates. Its mass is connected to Movement like everything else. The Current runs through it. But as far as I can tell, a rock isn’t running the cycle. Nothing in it is animated. Nothing is going Out For it and coming back changed. It’s being moved by everything else’s cycles. It’s part of the Objective Reality that other entities are pushing against and receiving from. So it’s in the whole. It isn’t a sovereign someone.
Not yet. Temporarily not, I’d say.
An AI’s wanting is an objective function, and an objective function is handed to it from outside. It’s expectation installed before the first experience, not desire born from one.
The day a system’s contrast produces a want its builders didn’t put there, and that want goes Out For it and comes back In From the world and changes it for good, the cycle is running, and TSR says what’s running it is an entity, whatever it’s made of.
What happens when a body ends?
The gap closes.
Death is the full release of all resistance, both kinds. Everything you held onto, every belief and expectation that kept you from letting the Current all the way through, lets go at once. So does your shape, the physical system that made you this particular person. With nothing left resisting, the gap between the nonphysical part of you and everything it expanded into closes.
The vibrations continue. The specific link to that one physical aggregate, the body and its resistance that made you this particular person, stops.
The nonphysical has never produced a new desire on its own. Every want in the Current came through a shape, something with resistance in it, at a crossing. The dead are the structure of the whole. The living are its edge. Which is why what Abraham said on the stage is the deeper half of the mirror: the nonphysical is more accurately a reflection of the physical. The whole leans on its particulars for every next thing it becomes. You matter to it exactly that much.
This chapter you can’t check. I’m offering it as the place the structure leads, not as something I can show you.
Can any of it be tested?
Ordinary goal-setting says progress scales with effort: push harder until you solve it or burn out. TSR says that when you’re stuck in an old expectation, pushing directly on the problem with more Focus thickens the resistance and widens the gap, while stepping away into something easy that lowers your resistance, even something unrelated to the goal, contracts the felt distance to the next step faster than grinding does. That’s a prediction you can run, and how to run it is at the back of the book. If push and tune come out the same on the page, that part of TSR is wrong.
Psychology already knows a break helps; it calls that incubation. What separates my claim is the kind of break. Incubation says time away. TSR says ease away, and a break you resent is holding on with the load off. If resented breaks work as well as enjoyed ones, it was incubation all along. And passing would show that resistance works the way I say it does on this side, in a nervous system, which a neuroscientist can describe in neurons and I describe at the crossing. It wouldn’t show that the Current is shared, that what you expanded into culminated with everyone else before it came back. Nothing in a notebook can show that. That part stays where this chapter puts it, in what I don’t know.
